The Senior Tooling Manager is responsible for leading, coaching, and mentoring the Tool Room Group in areas including new mold and component construction, lifecycle asset management, and machining. This role drives long-term business objectives by clearly defining goals through data and metrics and actively practices strong leadership, change management, project management, technical skills, and standardization of the department. The Senior Manager will also support the global tooling efforts in the design, sourcing, fabrication, repair, and maintenance of high-volume plastic injection molds, ensuring the Tool Room performs at a high level to meet the demands of mold repair, new tool construction, and general machining.

Essential Job Functions/Tasks:

  • Develops and executes short- and long-term strategic visions to meet key performance initiatives (KPIs).
  • Analyses current and future Tool Room staffing requirements using demand data to mitigate gaps and risks. Establishes specific, measurable goals which defines expected results; creates work plans with contingencies; determines required resources; moves plans through to completion.
  • Recruits and creates a motivating environment that fosters creative thinking and fuels productivity. Completes performance evaluations for direct reports, reviewing all staffing evaluations, and providing guidance for improvement and future growth. Mentors and coaches all levels of the team, including supervisors, and provides technical expertise.
  • Monitors the daily department operations, including workflow scheduling, staff management, production processes, quality, and all other activities to ensure on-time delivery. Identifies priorities, scheduling tooling projects, and using formal asset data tracking systems such as Hexagon/EAM.
  • Drives change using continuous process improvement tools like Lean/TPS/TPM, promoting a first-class vision and culture, and maintaining a "Kaizen" mindset for frequent, incremental improvements. Develops and deploys new and innovative programs and processes to improve operational performance that are consistent with corporate objectives .
  • Delivers results through optimizing the utilization of CNC 3/4/5 axis equipment, including but not limited to 24/7 ‘Lights Out” machining principle. Troubleshoots mold manufacturing and production tooling issues, determines root causes, and suggests corrective/preventative actions. Ensures the effective management of inventory control of spare parts and consumable materials.
  • Maintains open communication with different business units, collaborating with Global Tool Room Managers to ensure world-class standards, and establishing strong working relationships with internal departments .
  • Champions personal growth in leadership and career development and leads collaborative team efforts to achieve goals while aligning department strategy with the overall needs of the business .
  • Provides input on the development and planning for new products with a focus on design for manufacturability, supporting molding operations on mold process troubleshooting, problem-solving, and improvements in efficiency and utilization .
  • Supports preparing operating and capital investment budget and manages its adherence. Identifies and writes CAR’s for purchasing all new equipment and software.

Education/Training Required and Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education and relevant work experience.

Experience Required and Preferred:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a Tool Room environment with demonstrated expertise in the areas of plastic injection mold repair, new mold construction, mold design, jig, fixture design and construction, and machining.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Tool Room environment in a leadership role. Including expert knowledge in plastic injection molding.

  • Applied knowledge of tool steels and alloy materials used in the manufacturing of injection molds.
  • Working knowledge of the plastic injection molding industry, with understanding of specialized manufacturing methods and practices related to the construction of high production plastic injection molds.
  • Ability to troubleshoot injection mold related issues, with the ability to offer guidance to lead mold makers.
  • Knowledge to suggest improvements or alternate methods of achieving a solid Mold design to Mold design engineers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work within a team environment and demonstrate professional behavior.
  • Extensive knowledge of shop machining equipment and processes.
  • Ability to perform tooling evaluations and accurately quote replacement and/or repairs. Capable of confidently making decisions to repair or replace tooling in a way that best suits the organization.
  • Ability to evaluate tool room equipment and work with direct supervisor to make decisions to add or replace Capital.
  • Utilize Microsoft Word and Excel to create spreadsheets for presentations or to track project progress.
  • Knowledge of tool room machinery (Assets) with ability to acquire quotes and execute large machinery purchases.

The salary for this opportunity ranges from $153,000 to $192,000

The Company complies with all federal/local/state regulations in regard to pay. The above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition. Compensation offered to the successful candidate will be determined by qualifications, prior experience, other job-related factors, and geographic location.
